Saturday, 14 September, 2002: Dr Martens League Eastern Division.
Erith & Belvedere 2-2 Tonbridge Angels
A win in this game would have secured a top two place for the Angels, but Tonbridge never got going and it was left to a fortunate penalty decision in the dying minutes to allow the visitors to steal a point.

Pass after pass went astray as Tonbridge failed to gel against a side generally considered to be one of the weakest in the division. Despite most of the play in the first half hour, the Angels' midfield was unable to thread a decent ball through to any of its three strikers, Kedwell, Portway and the on-form Cass.

Tonbridge found themselves 1-0 down when Jason Davy was allowed to stroll past defenders Tingley and Ainsworth to cross the ball in to Steve White who converted past Radford. Being a goal down still didn't seem to motivate the Angels who were hampered by an out of form Portway and a strong Erith defence continually getting the better of the likes of Kedwell, Cass and Nick Barnes.

Alan Walker brought on Ryan Briggs for Barnes at half time but this had little effect, Erith doubling their lead on 55 minutes. Again a winger was allowed to cut through the defence, this time Steve Bennetts who passed three defenders before scoring.

The turning point came on 63 minutes when Mark Greatorex replaced Portway. Greatorex made some impressive runs down the right, always looking like the threat to the Erith defence that had been missing all game. On 75 minutes the Angels got a goal back, Greatorex chasing a long ball back to the right and putting in a cross which was blasted home by Brendon Cass. Greatorex almost got an equaliser with a lob but it was tipped over the bar by Erith 'keeper Adam Hart.

A remarkable turnaround in the last two minutes as Tonbridge equalised and then nearly stole all three points. An Erith defender was unlucky to be penalised after a loose ball bounced up on to his arm, the referee pointing to the spot to give a penalty which was scored by Cass, his fifth in three games.

The escape was very nearly made complete by Peter Overton who turned a cross from Cass just wide in injury time, but as it was the Angels can count themselves lucky to have come away with a point.
