| Monday, 26 August, 2002: Dr Martens League. Dartford 0-1 Tonbridge Angels A fourth-minute free-kick from Nick Barnes was enough to give the Angels all three points. It couldn't have got off to a better start for Tonbridge. Straight from the kick off Steve Portway was released on goal but shot over, then a curling free kick into the top corner from Barnes eluded goalkeeper Craig Tucker and the Angels were already in the lead. The home side, one of the favourites for promotion, struggled in the first half, and while the Tonbridge midfield took full advantage, chances went begging in front of goal. The best chance came in the 18th minute, after the again impressive Barnes got a cross in the box only for Danny Tingley to shoot wide with only the keeper to beat. A minute later another chance went begging when Peter Overton broke through on the right and crossed in for Portway to volley a shot against the cross bar. Dartford found themselves lucky to be going into the half-time break only a goal down. In the second half Dartford looked a much stronger outfit and piled the pressure on. On 55 minutes former Angel Graham Robertson hit the post with a shot, before Terry Ratchford struck the rebound against the bar before the ball was eventually cleared. Tonbridge also had to battle against some questionable refereeing. Several 50/50 decisions went the home side's way, and Danny Tingley was bizarrely booked for delaying a throw in. This was followed by an equally frustrating period of injury time, which lasted over nine minutes before the whistle was finally blown to secure a vital away win. Report by: Dan |
