| Saturday, 24 August, 2002: Dr Martens League. Tonbridge Angels 0-0 Bashley Defences dominated in this clash at Longmead Stadium, with neither 'keeper seeing much action. The Angels got off to a promising start with early efforts from Steve Portway, Danny Kedwell and Nick Barnes - Barnes hitting a 20-yarder wide after a solo run from deep in his own half. Bashley played themselves back into the game with some neat football, but lacked penetration, long range efforts from Andy Darnton and Matt Jones failing to trouble Angels keeper Danny Harwood. Bash came closest to scoring at the end of the first half. A 20-yarder from Craig Anstey fizzed wide in the 44th minute, and Harwood was at full stretch to fingertip an Anstey cross off the head of Ben Thomson right on half time. Tonbridge started the second half the brighter team. Ryan Royson missed a golden opportunity on 50 minutes, poking his shot wide after Barnes' free kick had eluded everyone in the box. Peter Overton then saw his shot cleared off the line by Martin Lisk after Dean Beckwith won a far post corner in the air. Poor Bash defending let in Steve Portway for another Angels chance, but the veteran striker arrowed his shot narrowly wide. The Angels continued to press, Manager Alan Walker using all three of his subs to try and achieve the breakthrough. despite this, Bashley held firm with relative ease. An 81st minute drive by Danny Tingley looked to hit the arm of a Bashley defender, but referee Evans was impervious to the Angels penalty appeals. Bashley came closest to snatching a winner, Davis' 87th minute shot clipping the top of the bar - but this was probably a game neither side deserved to win.
