Saturday, 17 August, 2002: Dr Martens League.
Fleet Town 1-1 Tonbridge Angels
Peter Overton rescued the Angels with an injury time equaliser as 10-man Tonbridge drew 1-1 at Fleet Town.

The Angels had to battle hard for the majority of the second half after Glen Cooke had been sent off on 54 minutes. The linesman had flagged after spotting an 'incident', and the referee promptly showed Cooke the red card. I can't comment on the incident, as I couldn't see it from where I was, so the linesman gets my benefit of the doubt. Not quite sure why he deserves it, however, after he had failed to see a trip on Portway in the penalty area right in front of his line of vision. Oh well.

Overall Tonbridge showed good build up play, but the finishing touch was never quite there: Nick Barnes putting a header over, and Danny Kedwell squandering a chance after being put through on goal examples of this. It was after this that Steve Portway, by no means the fastest player on the pitch, beat his defender to a well timed through ball, as he set up to shoot his trailing leg was taken away from him by the defender. The referee was too far away to make an accurate decision; the linesman however should have easily spotted it.

Portway was then surging through from the left towards goal but his close range shot was stopped by goalkeeper Chris Rye. Kedwell was later unfortunate not to score when he lobbed Rye at a tight angle only to see the ball cleared off the line. Fleet cleared another chance off the line in the second half, a header from loan signing Dean Beckwith, so surely it was only going to be a matter of time before we took the lead? Unfortunately not, as three minutes later Cooke was dismissed and Alan Walker brought on Ryan Royston in the hope of keeping a clean sheet.

With three minutes of normal time left though, Fleet got the breakthrough. Scott Saunders failed to get back in time to clear the ball and gave away a corner. The corner was fluffed by debut keeper Danny Harwood (who otherwise made a solid performance) and Mark Frampton headed the loose ball home. Six minutes of injury time were signalled after two lengthy stoppages and Overton got the equaliser in the fourth minute of injury time. Fleet failed to clear a shot and Overton charged through and drove a shot deep into the bottom corner to secure a point.

Man of the match: Peter Overton, who controlled the midfield dominantly and scored a great goal.
