Tuesday, 6 August, 2002: Courier Cup.
Tonbridge Angels 4-0 Tunbridge Wells
Goalscorers: Steve Portway (3), Nick Barnes.

Steve Portway proved his value to Tonbridge's cause this season with a skilful hat-trick to help the Angels win the third Courier Cup. After Tunbridge Wells had been denied the chance to take the lead through a contentious linesman's flag, Portway showed great instinct to get the first touch on a Tonbridge free- kick, directing the ball past Wells goalkeeper Nick French.

It was quickly 2-0 to the Angels, when Craig Roser's corner was flicked on at the near post by Peter Overton and Portway only needed the slightest of touches to glance the ball into the net.

The crowd was treated to a surprise at half-time when ex Manchester United star Andrei Kanchelskis was paraded on the pitch along with officials of the club. Was the Ukrainian seriously going to sign for the Angels? Sadly not, Andrei was there as his agent is a friend of the club. A late effort to get the player to take part in the match was unfortunately unable to succeed, as surely his talents would have been great entertainment at Longmead.

So it was left to Portway to be the star of the show and he clinched his hat-trick in the second half with a clinical finish after receiving a through pass from Overton. Nick Barnes made it a 4-0 rout with a clever free kick, placed low to the goalkeeper's left.

Lloyd Hume was presented with the Courier Cup by Kanchelskis, while Portway received the well-deserved man of the match award.
