Tonbridge Angels 1-3 Victoria 2001
The Nigerian team failed to leave their country due to visa problems, so their place was taken by another touring team. A youth team from Paraguay (U18/19?) with several junior internationals in the line-up found conditions to their liking and helped by a couple of blunders, ran out deserved winners.

The Angels were on a hiding to nothing and on a warm night - like late "winter" in their homeland and on a lush and even surface, the South Americans played a patient, short passing game totally alien to the hustle of the Southern League. The Angels had a couple of good spells but had no target player up front and some good build ups ended in poor finishing.

The first goal saw Salmon floundering (!) after making a complete hash of a backpass under no real pressure and directing the ball into his own net. Tonbridge equalised when Overton tapped in after a rebound off the post.

The visitors 2nd also came through a blunder when a harmless high ball was left by the defence for an attacker (No. 31!) to race through a gap and score. The 3rd goal came from a blinder of a free kick by Escobar that avoided the defensive wall and snuck inside the post.

Roser missed the two best chances to get the Angels back into the game and the Angels looked rather lethargic for the last half-hour. On this display Tonbridge still lack a midfield general and had little presence upfront. There were certainly plenty of lessons to be learned from the game.....
